More on Author Branding

I really enjoyed what Susan Kaye Quinn said about the Author Branding last week. It's something I've been thinking a lot about.

I am passionate about branding and feel 100% confident that the "me" I represent online is truly, well, ME. However, my brand doesn't represent my stories very well at all--and the reason is that it's simply not possible. And the reason for that? *I* am not one story. I am not only Desolation, but I am Jump Boys as well. I'm not only Jump Boys, I'm The Swift, Land Magic, Addicted, Blood Crown and the list goes on and on.

I write the stories in my heart and my heart is a bit psycho!

Have you seen the commercial starring musician Carrie Brownstein?

I could watch it all day, but I had a hard time finding it on YouTube because 1) I couldn't remember what she was advertising and 2) I honestly didn't know Carrie Brownstein before the commercial. But I persevered (thank you Google and YouTube search engines) and now I've listened to her music and watched her videos and could probably tell you anything you want to know about Carrie Brownstein. Why? Because of what she said in this American Express commercial.

She said,
I'm Carrie Brownstein and I get to be whoever I want.
Heck yes, she does! And guess what? So do we!

One of the privileges we enjoy as indie authors is freedom, like Sue said in her post. Feel like writing a fun middle-grade romp through space even though all you've written is dark, edgy YA angst? Go for it!

Think it might be fun to write a YA contemporary romance even though you've never written contemporary before? Why not?

Want to throw your hat into Manga, adult romance, or heck, create your own genre?

You. Can. Do. It.

Here's the thing. I've polled my readers on Facebook and Twitter and the answer is universal: Readers want a) to know when your next book is coming out, b) more about YOU and c) more about your stories.

Not once did someone tell me, "I don't care what else you write, I only want to read more about Desi."

Nope.

They told me, "I love everything you write!! Just give me MORE!"

And because we're indie and we can do whatever we want, more is what we can give them!

I think the notion that we are pigeon-holed based on the first story we publish is outdated. I do think we ought to have Facebook pages or websites for those looking for story-specific information, but as for your *AUTHOR NAME* blog/website, I think you should brand it YOU, not your stories.

Because you are many things, just as you have many stories to tell. I know I do. So while yes, I'm the author of the dark and angsty Desolation series, I'm also the author of a space-adventure done Hardy Boys style. And I have a hecka lot more stories (with much genre-hopping) to come.

I am Ali Cross, Author Extraordinaire. I am whatever I want to be. That's my brand.

Ali Cross is the sensei of the writer's dojo where she holds a black belt in awesome. She lives in Utah with her kickin' husband, two sparring sons, one  ninja cat, one sumo dog and four zen turtles.

She's the author the the young adult paranormal romance Desolation series, and the middle grade sci fi adventure, Jump Boys.

Indie Life - Join us!

Starting today, the Indelibles will be hosting a monthly feature called INDIE LIFE. Modeled after Alex Cavanaugh's awesome Insecure Writer's Group, this will be a chance for indie authors to post about indie life, find each other, offer support, encouragement, news, helpful hints, and anything else that makes life as an indie author a little easier.

What is Indie Life?
How: Sign up on the Linky at the bottom of this page
When: Post on the second Wednesday of the month (starting TODAY 1/9/2013)
What: Write anything indie related: something that will inspire or help a fellow indie; something that celebrates a release or a milestone; something that talks about the ups and downs, joys and heartaches of Being Indie.
Grab: The banner above to include in your posts!

Because being Indie doesn't have to mean going it alone.

Laura Pauling brings us her first Indie Life post.

With a new year comes the wave of blog posts about resolutions and writing goals. I enjoy reading them. I love seeing what my friends and blogging pals are up to. What insight they have in how to balance their writing and their families.

I don’t love writing resolution posts myself, so I jotted down some confessions. Most erred on the side of humorous and flimsy. But one mentioned how I miss the good ole days of blogging.

Three times a week, I blogged. Three times a week, I read a lot of posts and commented on most of them. But I didn’t mind it. In a phase of writing where I was querying and querying and querying, publishing to my blog and gaining readers brought a feeling of accomplishment.

Over the past year, each month, my Google reader diminished in posts. More writers were taking extended breaks. Eventually, I joined the crowd and dropped to blogging once a week.

But I was writing more, and I was publishing.

Even though I miss those days, I don’t want to go back. I still love keeping up with my friends and meeting new ones, but even more? I love seeing the progress my friends are making.

Some are signing with agents and getting book deals. Some are just jumping into the querying pool or signing with small presses. Others are self-publishing and hitting the best seller lists. More and more writers are making strides with their careers and finding success.

I couldn’t be more proud. I love it.

So yes, I miss the good ole days of blogging, but I love this day and age of blogging even more. Here’s to another fantastic year even with all the highs and the lows that a creative life brings.

HOP THROUGH FOR A PEEK INTO THE INDIE LIFE

Effects of the Indie Revolution on my reading and writing.

Hey, everyone! Laura Pauling here. Glad you popped by. I'm talking about how this Indie Revolution has jolted my reading and writing into high gear.

I’ve been reading a lot. I can't seem to stop. Lately, I've been reading 3 or 4 books at a time.

I have a list of books I’d like to read at my library, by my bed and on my Kindle. And then there are Indie books for under 5 dollars that are doing well that I’d really like to read. And sometimes I skip my lists and stacks and purchase the ones I’m dying to read.

But we’re all like that, aren’t we? (And the girl in the picture isn't me. lol)

Just starting out as a writer, I heard the advice read, read, read, and cut, cut, cut. I’m more of an underwriter so the cut, cut, cut for me is more like add, add, add. But to be honest I kinda scoffed at the read, read, read.

I’ve always loved reading but I didn’t purchase many new releases. I read what I could from the library. As a writer, I don’t think I got it. But wait, I read craft books. Tons of them. That must be the key. So with my brain overloaded from craft books, I continued to write.

It wasn’t until I seriously started researching agents that I went out of my way to purchase new releases from authors my top agents represented. After all, that’s what we were told to do so like a good little obedient writer that’s what I did by golly. And I could definitely see a difference. For example, this one agent I respect loved one genre but I learned he also loves incredibly detailed writing.

But something happened. I became addicted to new releases with gorgeous covers. I wanted to devour them whole. Some disappointed me but others I loved. I didn’t even read a lot of sequels. I wanted to taste new books. This was before self publishing hit.

And then self publishing hit.

So how has this affected my reading and my writing?

I'm reading even more and through all the reading I’ve done in the past few months, the good and the bad, the Indie and the traditionally published, I see that it is not following all the rules of the perfect first five pages that get you an agent or a deal or lots of sales.

It’s a great story with heart. I think it’s always been that way. I know this because regardless of publishing route, those are the books I read. I’ve put down just as many traditional published books as I have Indie books.

I’ve also branched out in my reading. I’ve read novellas and short stories. I’ve been reading adult books too.

I love that I have more choice.

So back to the craft books. I saw a bigger jump in my writing when I started reading more fiction and watching movies to study how authors applied all that craft knowledge crammed in my head. I saw it in action. And it led to blog posts like these:

Tips from the Opening Chapters of Nightshade.

Fifteen Tips to Strengthen Story Structure.

So how has the Indie revolution affected your reading? You are reading, right? And thanks for hanging out with me!

Laura Pauling (that's moi) authored A SPY LIKE ME, the first in the Circle of Spies Series. She writes about spies, murder and mystery. She lives the cover of suburban mom/author perfectly, from the minivan to the home-baked snickerdoodles, while hiding her secret missions and covert operations. But shh. Don't tell anyone.

Hang out with me at my blog and Twitter.

laurapauling @Juliana_Haygert Do you have a book release soon? #indiechat -9:03 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Stacey_WB @laurapauling I was going to ask the same thing.:) And WHY do you write NA as opposed to YA...or why both? #indiechat -9:03 PM Jul 10th, 2012

JessieHarrell maybe we should start by defining new adult. do we all agree what it is? #indiechat -9:03 PM Jul 10th, 2012

laurapauling @chel_c_cam Very cool! #indiechat -9:03 PM Jul 10th, 2012

BiblioCrunch @Stacey_WB @CarrieAButler @NAAlleyBlog ooh! curious to hear all about you ladies! #indiechat -9:03 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Juli_Alexander I'm supposed to be writing, but #indiechat looks like more fun. -9:04 PM Jul 10th, 2012

laurapauling What exactly is New Adult? #indiechat Does it have to be set in college? -9:04 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Stacey_WB @patricialynne07 Here's a blog post I wrote about NA: http://t.co/5cgMCE1A #indiechat -9:04 PM Jul 10th, 2012

CarrieAButler @laurapauling Me! My NA ParaRom, STRENGTH, comes out in March from @SapphireStarPub. :) #indiechat -9:05 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Lisa_Nowak Hey everyone! #indiechat -9:05 PM Jul 10th, 2012

teresamorrow what is the definition of new adult versus YA? Probably silly question but I write contemporary romance and it cld be NA #indiechat -9:05 PM Jul 10th, 2012

chel_c_cam For me, it reaches the age group of 17-25 ish. Not adult, not YA. In the middle. #indiechat -9:05 PM Jul 10th, 2012

patricialynne07 RT @Stacey_WB: @patricialynne07 Heres a blog post I wrote about NA: http://t.co/DBvf7NNz #indiechat -9:05 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Juliana_Haygert @laurapauling It doesn't need to be set in college, it just corresponds to the college-years #indiechat -9:05 PM Jul 10th, 2012

AngelaCarlie Hello, everyone. #indiechat -9:05 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Stacey_WB @laurapauling My NA stories are not set in college - but the MC is college age. #indiechat -9:05 PM Jul 10th, 2012

JessieHarrell @patricialynne07 my understanding is that new adult is edgier than YA and the MCs are just a little older... #indiechat -9:05 PM Jul 10th, 2012

KatGirl_Studio @laurapauling are we talking about New Adult tonight? #indiechat -9:05 PM Jul 10th, 2012

chel_c_cam What she said. RT @Juliana_Haygert: @laurapauling It doesnt need to be set in college, it just corresponds to the college-years #indiechat -9:06 PM Jul 10th, 2012

laurapauling @KatGirl_Studio Yep! #indiechat -9:06 PM Jul 10th, 2012

laurapauling @KatGirl_Studio The girls from New Adult Alley are with us. #indiechat -9:06 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Stacey_WB @chel_c_cam Exactly! #indiechat -9:06 PM Jul 10th, 2012

VictoriaSmith76 #indiechat Im personally a 20something and I wasn't seeing stories about peeps my age I feel so much growth happens in our 20s. Its needed! -9:06 PM Jul 10th, 2012

lgkelso @laurapauling I have seen some that could still be NA even though the MC is a senior in hs @Juliana_Haygerti #indiechat -9:06 PM Jul 10th, 2012

laurapauling So other than age what sets it apart from YA? or adult? #indiechat -9:06 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Juliana_Haygert @laurapauling I don't have a date yet, but I just signed the contract with @lyricalpress #indiechat -9:06 PM Jul 10th, 2012

KatGirl_Studio @laurapauling coolness. #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

laurapauling @Juliana_Haygert Congrats! #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

srjohannes i think it is not only age but also content and depth of content. #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

LisaSanchez3 @Juliana_Haygert Congrats! #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Karen_Hooper Yara in Tangled Tides is JUST turning 18 in book 1. So I guess it counts as New Adult. No high school scenes at all. #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

JessieHarrell @teresamorrow not silly at all. it's not a clearly-defined category yet #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Juliana_Haygert @laurapauling @LisaSanchez3 Thanks! Super excited ;) #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

AngelaCarlie Typically, who is the target audience for NA? #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Lisa_Nowak @VictoriaSmith76 It's amazing the amount of growth that happens in those college years. #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

TheRealCyberelf RT @Juliana_Haygert *raises hand* New Adult writer here, soon to be author #indiechat SINCERE CONGRATS! Very proud! -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

JessieHarrell @Juliana_Haygert congrats!! #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

chel_c_cam My NA is set in college, and centers around a lot of issues you have. Roommates, figuring out who you are, choosing career, etc. #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Juliana_Haygert And that too ... RT @srjohannes: i think it is not only age but also content and depth of content. #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

AngelaCarlie @Juliana_Haygert Congratulations! #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

laurapauling Most traditional YA seem to have 15 and 16 year olds. #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

chel_c_cam @Juliana_Haygert Wow, congratulations! #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

srjohannes @Juliana_Haygert sounds cute :) #indiechat -9:07 PM Jul 10th, 2012

MaganVernon Indie books are the best place to find New Adult books with authors like @Stacey_WB @AbbiGlines #indiechat -9:08 PM Jul 10th, 2012

srjohannes RT @MaganVernon: Indie books are the best place to find New Adult books with authors like @Stacey_WB @AbbiGlines #indiechat -9:08 PM Jul 10th, 2012

KatGirl_Studio @laurapauling My Marked Ones Trilogy is technically New Adult #indiechat -9:08 PM Jul 10th, 2012

VictoriaSmith76 #indiechat my #newadult novel THE CRIMSON HUNT is being published as well through @CuriosityQuills. Publishers ARE wanting NA ;D -9:08 PM Jul 10th, 2012

JessieHarrell @VictoriaSmith76 that's true. I think publishers assume college kids don't have time to read, so no stories for you! #indiechat -9:08 PM Jul 10th, 2012

K23Detectives #indiechat I got a question, do anything starring teenagers and their problems have to be YA? -9:08 PM Jul 10th, 2012

chel_c_cam Another series I have starts out at the end of high school and goes to first semester in college. I'm still calling it YA. #indiechat -9:08 PM Jul 10th, 2012

patricialynne07 I think my next release could go in NA. MC is 18 & bit more swearing than I'd put in my YA stories. #indiechat -9:09 PM Jul 10th, 2012

lgkelso Exactly! RT @srjohannes: i think it is not only age but also content and depth of content. #indiechat -9:09 PM Jul 10th, 2012

chel_c_cam RT @MaganVernon: Indie books are the best place to find New Adult books with authors like @Stacey_WB @AbbiGlines #indiechat -9:09 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Stacey_WB @MaganVernon Aw, thanks! Magan's about to publish a contemporary NA novel too. #indiechat -9:09 PM Jul 10th, 2012

CarrieAButler @laurapauling There also tends to be a big focus on (life) transition in NA. #indiechat -9:09 PM Jul 10th, 2012

MaganVernon @VictoriaSmith76 So good to see so many people with NA books! #indiechat -9:09 PM Jul 10th, 2012

KatGirl_Studio @JessieHarrell which is silly because I read more in college than Middle school and HS combine. #indiechat -9:09 PM Jul 10th, 2012

laurapauling So there is a clear difference b/t NA and YA - what makes it NA and not adult ot her than age? #indiechat -9:09 PM Jul 10th, 2012

JessieHarrell @K23Detectives not necessarily, but I'd say predominately. depends a lot on who your audience is going to be #indiechat -9:10 PM Jul 10th, 2012

LM_Preston I wondered that RT @laurapauling: So there is a clear difference b/t NA and YA - what makes it NA and not adult ot her than age? #indiechat -9:10 PM Jul 10th, 2012

MaganVernon @K23Detectives Not necessarily. Look at Fifteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. That stars teenagers, but is a very adult book #indiechat -9:10 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Stacey_WB @K23Detectives No. If there are older characters involved...I'd call it Family Saga. #indiechat -9:10 PM Jul 10th, 2012

K23Detectives #indiechat I ask because my superheroine novel stars four 16 years olds but I'm loath to call it young adult -9:10 PM Jul 10th, 2012

jayceedelorenzo Hi, all! What are we talking about? #indiechat -9:10 PM Jul 10th, 2012

chel_c_cam Some other great NA authors are @JamieMcguire_ and @amy_a_bartol #indiechat -9:10 PM Jul 10th, 2012

VictoriaSmith76 @Juliana_Haygert #indiechat It's about the experience. If I read a story about an indep.16 year old mom I'd consider that NA! @srjohannes -9:10 PM Jul 10th, 2012

srjohannes @K23Detectives depends. Lovely bones came out in adult and it is about a 15 yr old and her family but delas with tough topics #indiechat -9:10 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Karen_Hooper Agree! @VictoriaSmith76 #indiechat Im a 20something and I wasn't seeing stories about peeps my age. So much growth happens in our 20s. -9:11 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Juliana_Haygert @laurapauling tone, language and the stage of life. #indiechat -9:11 PM Jul 10th, 2012

K23Detectives @Stacey_WB I don't write romance, but there are plenty of adults around and aliens too. #indiechat -9:11 PM Jul 10th, 2012

MaganVernon @chel_c_cam My upcoming NA novel deals with a girl failing out of college. We need more books with trials of college life. #indiechat -9:11 PM Jul 10th, 2012

rlynn_solomon Hi all. My NA (completed) is about a grad school dropout working in a restaurant. Thrilled to learn more about the (sub) genre! #indiechat -9:11 PM Jul 10th, 2012

JessieHarrell @chel_c_cam it's a lot about content... if you'd be okay with a younger teen reading it, then I think YA is the right label #indiechat -9:11 PM Jul 10th, 2012

CarrieAButler @jayceedelorenzo We're defining NA and sharing how it differs from other categories. :) #indiechat -9:11 PM Jul 10th, 2012

srjohannes @VictoriaSmith76 good point! #indiechat -9:11 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Juliana_Haygert @laurapauling Adult novels are more worried about paying bills. NA are worried about getting a job, learning to live alone #indiechat -9:11 PM Jul 10th, 2012

JessieHarrell @K23Detectives why? what about the young adult title bothers you? #indiechat -9:11 PM Jul 10th, 2012

chel_c_cam @MaganVernon Amen to that! #indiechat -9:11 PM Jul 10th, 2012

K23Detectives @JessieHarrell late teen-20s comic book readers. #indiechat -9:11 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Stacey_WB @laurapauling I think it's the opposite of the NA vs. YA - it's what you pull back from writing. #indiechat -9:12 PM Jul 10th, 2012

JessieHarrell RT @Juliana_Haygert: Adult novels are more worried about paying bills. NA are worried about getting a job, learning to live alone #indiechat -9:12 PM Jul 10th, 2012

chel_c_cam @JessieHarrell The content is definitely suitable for younger audiences, so I'm not to worried about the age thing. #indiechat -9:12 PM Jul 10th, 2012

VictoriaSmith76 @KatGirl_Studio #indiechat this seems to be the biggest argument. I DO read and I'm in grad school. NA is happening :D @JessieHarrell -9:12 PM Jul 10th, 2012

srjohannes @laurapauling i think that is why they say there are not tween or NA genres - b/c they fall into other groups #indiechat -9:12 PM Jul 10th, 2012

K23Detectives @JessieHarrell Because I get middle age women who read it and then complain about the violence in A SUPER HERO NOVEL #indiechat -9:12 PM Jul 10th, 2012

jayceedelorenzo @CarrieAButler Thanks! Sounds good. #indiechat -9:13 PM Jul 10th, 2012

VictoriaSmith76 @Juliana_Haygert #indiechat very true my sista! @laurapauling -9:13 PM Jul 10th, 2012

BiblioCrunch Has anyone read The Beach? #indiechat Thoughts? -9:13 PM Jul 10th, 2012

Stacey_WB Why do you think the indie community is more accepting of NA. We all seem to be going for it! #indiechat -9:13 PM Jul 10th, 2012

MeganCashman My upcoming book is about a college graduate. Definitely not YA, so NA it is? #indiechat -9:13 PM Jul 10th, 2012

BiblioCrunch ps @Addison_Moore, when are you coming out with your last book! #indiechat -9:13 PM Jul 10th, 2012

JessieHarrell @K23Detectives gotcha. comic books should have their own category all to themselves! #indiechat -9:13 PM Jul 10th, 2012

KatGirl_Studio I just write the book the way the story needs to be written and figure out what to label it later. #indiechat -9:13 PM Jul 10th, 2012

laurapauling So what publishing routes are the girls at NA Alley taking? Small press? Self publishing? #indiechat -9:14 PM Jul 10th, 2012

MeganCashman @JessieHarrell True since it seems new. But my book will be self-pubbed later this summer, so maybe I could market it as NA? #indiechat -9:19 PM Jul 10th, 2012
