Why Every Indie Author Needs A Business Plan

A business plan--do you need one?

I confess, I was daunted by the idea when I first heard about it. I knew I needed to view my foray into self-publishing as a business venture, but how did one write a plan about that?

1) you write a book
2) you publish it
3) you hope it sells

What more could you  possibly plan? A whole lot it seems. Still, I had no idea where to start. The lovey Susan Kaye Quinn(link) had one, and she let me see what she'd done. It was helpful. She gave me phrases like, Goals, Audience, Brand, How will I promote, Marketing Budget.

You mean, I should break it down more than my measly three points, Sue? Well, she was certainly doing something right, since, her book was, like, selling.

So I did it, and it helped. I was starting to see myself as a business person, rather than "just" a writer hoping to break even some day.

Then Denise Grover Swank did this fantastic three part guest blog series on The Business Plan(link). Talk about comprehensive! And, man, it seemed to work for her! I was motivated to start!

I used her TABLE OF CONTENTS (yes, her business plan has a table of contents) as a template and officially began my own small business document, creating a comprehensive plan for 2013.

Denise's
Table of Contents
1. Description of Bramagioia Enterprises
2. Ownership of Bramagioia Enterprises and Location of Business
3. Products
4. Pricing Strategy
5. Financial Plan
6. Production Schedule and Writing Plans
7. Targeted Audience
8. Marketing and Promoting Plan
9. Web Plan
10. Long Term Goals
11. Summary

I added:

12. Projection of Perception series costs and profits

Some of the important things I learned by doing this:

1) Identifying myself as a business person with the objective of making a profit helped me to see myself as not just a creative person, but a person with a goal outside of that creativity (though linked. Makes sense?)

2) When you view things from a business perspective you make different decisions than if you're just making emotional or creative calls. (This only matters if you care about making money with your art.)

One big change I made while working out this plan was to fine tune my focus for 2013 in terms of what I was going to spend my time writing. From a business perspective it made sense for me to focus on my current series, the Perception Series and postpone a sequel to Seaweed. Denise did this with one of her series--focusing on the one that had the most financial potential and waiting on the one that didn't.

Before doing this plan, I'd felt "obligated" somehow to produce this next book. After doing the  plan I realized that I was free to do what was best for my business and that meant waiting on the Seaweed sequel.

3) Now that I have been indie publishing for over a year, I actually have some data, in terms of sales, promotional successes and flops, plus I've had a year to observe other authors, what worked or didn't work for them. I had information I could use to determine pricing strategies, and create a promotion/marketing plan.

4) Working on this plan also made me take a hard look at my web presence. From a writer/writing point of view my current blog was fine. Just fine. But it was missing the mark in terms of a business move. I realized I was at a place now where my web presence needed to refocus to readers and fans. Those were the people I wanted looking for me (and were starting to look for me) and I needed to give them what they were looking for. I also decided that the "networking" part was better spent on FB and twitter than on my blog.

5) Planning ahead with a production schedule. This was new and scary ground. By planning ahead I had to take a good look at just how long the process would take, or rather how long I wanted it to take. If I wanted to get books 2 and 3 of the Perception series out in 2013, I couldn't just wing it anymore.

Though I love my beta readers, they are all busy writing and building a business too. Turn around times are just too unpredictable. I made the leap to hire a developmental editor. Not only would this streamline things time wise, but I'd have a consistent set of editorial eyes to help me do the best job I could with a series. You  have to book a developmental editor 3 to 4 months ahead, so you have to plan, and be realistic with your production abilities. I went from thinking I could produce 3 books in 2013, to accepting that I could only produce 2 books if I wanted to do them well. And I want to do them well.  I now have deadlines for when the first draft needs to be completed, when it needs to be revised, when it needs to go to the D. editor, the copy editor, when the cover needs to be completed, when the promotion needs to start, etc, all on my calendar a year in advance.

So, if you're a writer looking to make money from your writing, I strongly encourage you to work on a comprehensive business plan. You'll be surprised at what you discover about yourself!

Honesty, self publishing, and home-made pastries.

I’m not a cook. I don’t even really know how to cook. I follow recipes. But somehow we do okay. My family eats nutritious meals and sometimes they turn out pretty good. Well, not according to my younger son, who commented yesterday.

“Is that vomit? Or butternut squash?”

I told him he’d appreciate butternut squash when he’s older.

I really don’t want to talk about the numerous times I’ve completely dissolved the chicken in the crock-pot because it cooked too long. Or the fact that my mac and cheese still tastes like pasta with melted cheese despite my many attempts.

What I love is the creative side of cooking. I love to find a fun recipe and then bake it, usually just to see if I can do it. One time, I found the recipe for a breakfast Danish. And decided I was going to do this. Oh, the cookbook made it look so good. Golden crusted outside, a fruit filling spilling out the scored tops, and this melt-in-your mouth glaze dribbled over the top.

Thankfully, without too much trouble, I made it. And it was absolutely delicious. I even got really brave and made it again to bring to a sleepover reunion with high school friends.

The mom of one of my friends took one look at it and smiled. She said, “Now that’s homemade.”

But her remark was not an insult. She recognized the fact that if a professional had made it, or a factory, it would’ve had perfectly rounded corners. Each score across the top would’ve been exactly an inch apart, and the glaze would’ve been evenly applied.

I’ll connect the dots if you haven’t already. I’ve been reading a lot of self published books lately. Not because of the price but because I love the honesty in the writing and the story.

I love that they’re not perfect.

Laura Pauling loves pastries. And you'll find them sprinkled through out the pages of A SPY LIKE ME. The sequel, HEART OF AN ASSASSIN, is due out soon!

Her debut middle grade, HOW TO SURVIVE ANCIENT SPELLS AND CRAZY KINGS will be released in November. Try to say that title several times fast.

Stop by her blog and say hello!

Short Story vs. Novel

A lot of authors start out writing short stories before they tackle a novel. Going from a short story to a novel has an intuitive progression that all who hope to publish should pay attention to.

What are the differences?
A short story can be seen as a slice of life.
A novel could cover an entire life.

A short story covers a narrow time frame.
A novel could cover a massive time frame.

A short story most often only includes one geographical location.
A novel could cover many geographical locations.

A short story can be anywhere from 500 to 9,000 words, although most magazines prefer them to be under 2,000.
A novel can be anywhere from 60,000 to over 100, 000 words.

So, what are the similarities?

Both a novel and short story should have a beginning, middle and end and follow the three act time frame.
Both should start with a great hook, so that the reader doesn't want to put it down until the book/short story is finished.
Both should have an inciting incident in Act 1.
Both should have the characters facing obstacles, setbacks, and minor victories in Act 2.
Both should end Act 2 with the climax of the story.
Both should have a conclusion to the story in Act 3.

While the short story helps the author become clear and concise, the novel offers the opportunity to expand and elaborate descriptions, subplots, and character arcs.

Have you thought about writing a short story? What would your hook be?

Anthologies - yes or no?

Hopefully you all recall when the Indelibles put out the In His Eyes anthology for Valentine's Day (the cover is on the right side of this page. Yep, right there -->  Remember now?)  All of the stories were short snippets about love from a guy's point of view.

Since then, I was lucky enough to be selected to write for another anthology.  TWO AND TWENTY DARK TALES, a charity anthology, came out on Tuesday.  In it, all the authors took a Mother Goose nursery rhyme and spun in into a dark YA short story.  The experience was awesome and really forced me to work outside of my comfort zone.  (I had Hey Diddle, Diddle, so my main characters were a laughing dog, fiddle-playing cat and moon-jumping cow.  Tell me that's not a challenge.)
I love that the proceeds from the first 5,000 copies will go to charity.  I also love that the anthology provides a way for an Indie like myself to appear along side YA greats like Nancy Holder, Sarwat Chadda, Michelle Zink and Gretchen McNeil (to name but a few).  I love that the anthology was put out by a brand new Indie press, Month 9 Books.

I confess, though, I do worry that readers will pick up the anthology to catch a glimpse of their favorite authors and my story will sit, unread, like yesterday's newspaper.  On the flip side, I also worry what will happen if my story is read.  My short story is COMPLETELY different from Destined.  You know how everyone always tells you to write within your genre?  The best I could do was build my short story around mythology (although it draws upon Egyptian lore whereas Destined is Greek mythology).  So I also worry that readers who might like my short story will pick up Destined and be expecting something different.

[Aside: if you're curious about my short story, "I Come Bearing Souls," you can catch a peek at some of my inspiration pictures on my Pinterest Board.]

I know it's normal to be fearful when you try something new.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained, and all of that.  And in the end, I love that I am a part of this amazing anthology.  But still I wonder ...

Readers:  Do you like anthologies? Do you ever discover new authors after reading an anthology?  When you read an anthology, do you read all of the stories?

Authors:  Have you found value in participating in an anthology (aside from the value that you improve as a writer every time you craft a story)?

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Jessie Harrell is the author of Destined, a YA reimagining of the Greek myth of Eros and Psyche (on sale for $.99 for Kindle and Nook).  Her newest story, "I Come Bearing Souls," will appear in the TWO AND TWENTY DARK TALES anthology.  You might say she has a healthy obsession with mythology.
She lives in sunny Florida and is longing for some cooler weather and changing leaves. She's pretty sure she's out of luck.

STILL CLIMBING

“Take the first step in faith.
You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
~Martin Luther King

So true isn't it?
I've been trying to get back in my writing groove because I have TWO sequels that need to be finished yesterday. I’m actually revealing the cover for one of those sequels today, so check it out if you have a sec.

Anywho, I thought about writing a new post, but my mind is running amuck elsewhere, so I'm cheating. This is a post I wrote a couple years ago, but it still applies to me today and I believe wholeheartedly in every word. Maybe some other writers out there can relate.

When I first thought about writing a novel I thought about MLK's quote and stepped. Blindly.

Staring up at the spiraling, intimidating, long path in front of me.
Wondering if all this climbing and stressing is worth it.
Is it foolish to believe I'll ever reach the top?
It looks impossible from way down here.
With such a long, long way to go.
Pushing through the pain.
Tripping & Stumbling.
Self-Doubting.

BREATHE.

STEP.

BELIEVE.

Climb blindly.
But enjoy the scenery.
Make each step mean something.
Realize turning back is also giving up.
Set small, reachable goals, but keep dreaming big.
Don't compete with others climbing the stairway with you.
Learn, grow, and expand your support system--and horizons.
Put one foot in front of the other, passionately, even when it's hard.

Remember, we don't have to see the whole staircase. Keep in mind, we're not alone on this journey. Rest assured, the top is probably nothing like you think it will look like anyway. Besides, there is always another staircase waiting to be conquered. Keep climbing. Blindly. But with faith. Oh, and breathe. Just breathe.

Karen was born and bred in Baltimore, frolicked and froze in Colorado for a couple of years, and is currently sunning and splashing around Florida with her two beloved dogs. She's addicted to coffee, chocolate, and complicated happily-ever-afters.

Juliana_Haygert @susankayequinn for me, it depends on the story. Some I pantsed 100%, some I plotted 100%, some was half-half. #indiechat -9:24 PM Oct 16th, 2012

susankayequinn @KatGirl_Studio I sketch out scenes (is that nonlinear), then put them in order on the Corkboard of Doom. #indiechat -9:24 PM Oct 16th, 2012

laurapauling I remember character arc was a big one for me. I just didn't get it when I started writing. #indiechat -9:28 PM Oct 16th, 2012

ulbrichalmazan Hi #indiechat! Does anyone here feel that working with editors improves their writing? -9:28 PM Oct 16th, 2012

laurapauling @ulbrichalmazan I think working with the right editor would. #indiechat -9:29 PM Oct 16th, 2012

Addison_Moore @Stacey_WB Yes! I need to know the beginning and the end. #indiechat -9:29 PM Oct 16th, 2012

Froze8 @susankayequinn @Addison_Moore Hahaha! I love this! #indiechat -9:29 PM Oct 16th, 2012

laurapauling @ulbrichalmazan I guess in ways similar to a beta read but maybe even more mind blowing. #indiechat -9:29 PM Oct 16th, 2012

TORRESpamela @Stacey_WB Sometimes I find that once I have an outline the white page isn't so intimidating. Don't always follow it. #indiechat -9:29 PM Oct 16th, 2012

HeatherSunseri @laurapauling I've struggled with character arcs, especially for the secondary characters. They need them too. #indiechat. -9:29 PM Oct 16th, 2012
