Finishing Up Those Trilogies - Contrition Cover reveal!

The Perception Trilogy is my first real series, meaning the story begins in book one and doesn't complete until the end of book three. (My Clockwise series is unconventional that way, which is why I point this out.)

What a ride! It's a bittersweet to be closing in on the end. I've spent so much time getting to know and love my characters! It's kind of like having to wave good bye as your child leaves for college - it's good and necessary, but it marks a dramatic change. You're happy to see them develop and grow, but at the same time you can't help the tears that well up.

You find you make frequent trips to the baby albums, reminiscing on the growing up years. I began the first draft of Perception two and a half years ago, while on a trip to Romania. I'd meant to take a break from writing, but instead I started getting all these great ideas for a new sci/fi dystopian. Everywhere we went I'd be stopping to type in  quick notes on my iphone, and at night I wrote scenes on a borrowed laptop.

I published Perception on September 01, 2012, almost one year ago. Since then I've written and published book 2, Volition, and now in just a few short weeks, the final book.

Yes!

CONTRITION is releasing September 26th! Of course, there will be swag/contests/sales leading up to the launch. I hope you join in on the fun!

Without further ado....(drum role)....

More than 20 Can Play...

Wow, guys. So I've been watching these Indelibles from afar for a year now, and I was just thrilled and honored when I was asked to join the group.

Back in the fall of 2011, I had an agent and was working on a book deal, but I could already see the publishing tides were turning. Things were changing for independent authors, and there were more and more great, self-published books hitting the market.

I was always a traditional girl. I had worked as an editor for years, and I believed in the system. But I can point to two distinct moments when my mind started to change.

The first was when fellow Indelible Elle Strauss posted a Ted talk by Margaret Atwood (link). You should take a moment and watch it. The short version is Atwood basically threw down the challenge: She didn't understand why anyone would take a traditional deal anymore.

"Sure, that's easy to say if you're Margaret Atwood," I thought.

The next thing that happened was my good friend (and fellow Indelible) Susan Quinn (link) began posting about her successes in independent publishing, her goals and her ability to reach them. I was editing books for several self-published authors, and I saw the quality storytelling going on. I knew she was right.

On Amazon
Finally, my own (former) agent advised me to self-publish my debut YA romantic-comedy The Truth About Faking (link), and from there, I was completely sold.

Joining forces with a fantastic group of fellow independent writers was the icing on the cake for me.

Writing is a lonely, isolating endeavor. Making the right decision in these publishing times is a scary thing, and it's so great to have good friends and fellow experts you can turn to for advice.

This group is just one example of how writers can work together, but there's absolutely no reason why it should be the only one. Reach out to fellow writers and form your own group!

And regardless of your path to publication, writers can (and should) help each other. We can (and should) encourage each other, and ultimately, we can  (and should) succeed together!

As I like to say, it takes months or years to write an amazing book, but it only takes days to read it. There's plenty of room at the table for everyone!

The Indelibles and groups like ours are about promoting the best part of being writers--helping each other. Grab the baton and do the same!

Why Every Indie Author Needs A Business Plan

A business plan--do you need one?

I confess, I was daunted by the idea when I first heard about it. I knew I needed to view my foray into self-publishing as a business venture, but how did one write a plan about that?

1) you write a book
2) you publish it
3) you hope it sells

What more could you  possibly plan? A whole lot it seems. Still, I had no idea where to start. The lovey Susan Kaye Quinn(link) had one, and she let me see what she'd done. It was helpful. She gave me phrases like, Goals, Audience, Brand, How will I promote, Marketing Budget.

You mean, I should break it down more than my measly three points, Sue? Well, she was certainly doing something right, since, her book was, like, selling.

So I did it, and it helped. I was starting to see myself as a business person, rather than "just" a writer hoping to break even some day.

Then Denise Grover Swank did this fantastic three part guest blog series on The Business Plan(link). Talk about comprehensive! And, man, it seemed to work for her! I was motivated to start!

I used her TABLE OF CONTENTS (yes, her business plan has a table of contents) as a template and officially began my own small business document, creating a comprehensive plan for 2013.

Denise's
Table of Contents
1. Description of Bramagioia Enterprises
2. Ownership of Bramagioia Enterprises and Location of Business
3. Products
4. Pricing Strategy
5. Financial Plan
6. Production Schedule and Writing Plans
7. Targeted Audience
8. Marketing and Promoting Plan
9. Web Plan
10. Long Term Goals
11. Summary

I added:

12. Projection of Perception series costs and profits

Some of the important things I learned by doing this:

1) Identifying myself as a business person with the objective of making a profit helped me to see myself as not just a creative person, but a person with a goal outside of that creativity (though linked. Makes sense?)

2) When you view things from a business perspective you make different decisions than if you're just making emotional or creative calls. (This only matters if you care about making money with your art.)

One big change I made while working out this plan was to fine tune my focus for 2013 in terms of what I was going to spend my time writing. From a business perspective it made sense for me to focus on my current series, the Perception Series and postpone a sequel to Seaweed. Denise did this with one of her series--focusing on the one that had the most financial potential and waiting on the one that didn't.

Before doing this plan, I'd felt "obligated" somehow to produce this next book. After doing the  plan I realized that I was free to do what was best for my business and that meant waiting on the Seaweed sequel.

3) Now that I have been indie publishing for over a year, I actually have some data, in terms of sales, promotional successes and flops, plus I've had a year to observe other authors, what worked or didn't work for them. I had information I could use to determine pricing strategies, and create a promotion/marketing plan.

4) Working on this plan also made me take a hard look at my web presence. From a writer/writing point of view my current blog was fine. Just fine. But it was missing the mark in terms of a business move. I realized I was at a place now where my web presence needed to refocus to readers and fans. Those were the people I wanted looking for me (and were starting to look for me) and I needed to give them what they were looking for. I also decided that the "networking" part was better spent on FB and twitter than on my blog.

5) Planning ahead with a production schedule. This was new and scary ground. By planning ahead I had to take a good look at just how long the process would take, or rather how long I wanted it to take. If I wanted to get books 2 and 3 of the Perception series out in 2013, I couldn't just wing it anymore.

Though I love my beta readers, they are all busy writing and building a business too. Turn around times are just too unpredictable. I made the leap to hire a developmental editor. Not only would this streamline things time wise, but I'd have a consistent set of editorial eyes to help me do the best job I could with a series. You  have to book a developmental editor 3 to 4 months ahead, so you have to plan, and be realistic with your production abilities. I went from thinking I could produce 3 books in 2013, to accepting that I could only produce 2 books if I wanted to do them well. And I want to do them well.  I now have deadlines for when the first draft needs to be completed, when it needs to be revised, when it needs to go to the D. editor, the copy editor, when the cover needs to be completed, when the promotion needs to start, etc, all on my calendar a year in advance.

So, if you're a writer looking to make money from your writing, I strongly encourage you to work on a comprehensive business plan. You'll be surprised at what you discover about yourself!

Honesty, self publishing, and home-made pastries.

I’m not a cook. I don’t even really know how to cook. I follow recipes. But somehow we do okay. My family eats nutritious meals and sometimes they turn out pretty good. Well, not according to my younger son, who commented yesterday.

“Is that vomit? Or butternut squash?”

I told him he’d appreciate butternut squash when he’s older.

I really don’t want to talk about the numerous times I’ve completely dissolved the chicken in the crock-pot because it cooked too long. Or the fact that my mac and cheese still tastes like pasta with melted cheese despite my many attempts.

What I love is the creative side of cooking. I love to find a fun recipe and then bake it, usually just to see if I can do it. One time, I found the recipe for a breakfast Danish. And decided I was going to do this. Oh, the cookbook made it look so good. Golden crusted outside, a fruit filling spilling out the scored tops, and this melt-in-your mouth glaze dribbled over the top.

Thankfully, without too much trouble, I made it. And it was absolutely delicious. I even got really brave and made it again to bring to a sleepover reunion with high school friends.

The mom of one of my friends took one look at it and smiled. She said, “Now that’s homemade.”

But her remark was not an insult. She recognized the fact that if a professional had made it, or a factory, it would’ve had perfectly rounded corners. Each score across the top would’ve been exactly an inch apart, and the glaze would’ve been evenly applied.

I’ll connect the dots if you haven’t already. I’ve been reading a lot of self published books lately. Not because of the price but because I love the honesty in the writing and the story.

I love that they’re not perfect.

Laura Pauling loves pastries. And you'll find them sprinkled through out the pages of A SPY LIKE ME. The sequel, HEART OF AN ASSASSIN, is due out soon!

Her debut middle grade, HOW TO SURVIVE ANCIENT SPELLS AND CRAZY KINGS will be released in November. Try to say that title several times fast.

Stop by her blog and say hello!

AngelaAckerman @laurapauling guest posts in newsletters can help keep it fresh too. #indiechat -9:35 PM Sep 25th, 2012

KatGirl_Studio @Froze8 but what did it do? I can suggest an alternative if I know what it does. #indiechat -9:35 PM Sep 25th, 2012

bytefulcom @Froze8 @KatGirl_Studio They're shutting down the API, but I don't think they're shutting down the whole service. #indiechat -9:35 PM Sep 25th, 2012

BiblioCrunch @Froze8 @KatGirl_Studio you can import your feeds into mailchimp #indiechat -9:36 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Steenaholmes @HeatherSunseri gotta say, I love the idea of making it like a letter to a friend…#indiechat and less like a sales pitch. -9:36 PM Sep 25th, 2012

JessieHarrell sorry guys, but I gotta go clean a supremely nasty coffee pot so it's useable tomorrow. caffeine = necessity #indiechat -9:36 PM Sep 25th, 2012

laurapauling I prefer not to bloat my newsletter by making it a requirement for a contest. #indiechat -9:36 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Froze8 @bytefulcom Still doesn't look likely they'll fix my lost subscribers, I'm looking for something more stable. #indiechat -9:37 PM Sep 25th, 2012

duolit @laurapauling Yeah it loses it's value if you force people to join, that's a good point #indiechat -9:37 PM Sep 25th, 2012

DougSolter Very late. But I'm here for... #indiechat -9:37 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Steenaholmes @laurapauling good point Laura! When you bloat contests you never find out who your real readers are. #indiechat -9:37 PM Sep 25th, 2012

duolit @chihuahuazero Definitely! Use Mailchimp's built-in A/B testing or just do your own experimenting to find what works. #indiechat -9:37 PM Sep 25th, 2012

HeatherSunseri @laurapauling Yeah, that seems spammy and gimmicky. I want people to "want" to receive my newsletter, not feel bullied into it. #indiechat -9:37 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Stacey_WB @laurapauling I'm the same. I always suggest that people sign up for it, but I don't make it a requirement to get contest points. #indiechat -9:38 PM Sep 25th, 2012

chihuahuazero @duolit A/B testing is a paid feature, but I'll just fiddle around with the subject line. But it'll be a slow process. #indiechat -9:38 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Addison_Moore @BiblioCrunch Logan's in there too! ETHEREAL KNIGHTS an Oliver POV novel! All done just waiting in the edit line. @laurapauling #indiechat -9:38 PM Sep 25th, 2012

MXKremzen @duolit So true! I'm definitely stuck in that rut right now. Any advice on how to get out of it? #indiechat -9:40 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Froze8 @chihuahuazero I've used mail chimp for work so I'll have to look into it. #indiechat -9:40 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Addison_Moore @duolit There are no truer words. But we read, too. So there's that. Maybe light marketing to authors. @MXKremzen #indiechat -9:40 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Diana_Murdock @laurapauling That's the beauty of being indie. No boundaries. #indiechat -9:54 PM Sep 25th, 2012

laurapauling @bytefulcom From what we said earlier: keep newsletters personal. #indiechat -9:54 PM Sep 25th, 2012

duolit @KatGirl_Studio Definitely, but it's all email-based, so you can save them for afterwards if you'd like :-) Also: congrats!!! #indiechat -9:55 PM Sep 25th, 2012

laurapauling @chel_c_cam Hope it goes well! #indiechat -9:55 PM Sep 25th, 2012

SuttonShields @Battista_j @bytefulcom And by copies, do you mean paperbacks? I'm sorry for all of the questions. Hope to be smart on this 1 day.#indiechat -9:55 PM Sep 25th, 2012

DougSolter That's what I've heard too. Just wondering if anyone has tried it and had similar results. RT @laurapauling #indiechat -9:55 PM Sep 25th, 2012

MXKremzen @KatGirl_Studio Congrats! #indiechat -9:55 PM Sep 25th, 2012

KatGirl_Studio @duolit oh yay awesome! #indiechat -9:55 PM Sep 25th, 2012

duolit @MXKremzen Just keep reminding them via social media, blog, newsletter. You don't want have an incentive, that gets slimy #indiechat -9:55 PM Sep 25th, 2012

KatGirl_Studio @AngelaAckerman thanks =^.^= #indiechat -9:55 PM Sep 25th, 2012

jclillis @chel_c_cam @duolit @Steenaholmes I hope so! That was one lure of going indie for me: more freedom to genre-hop. #indiechat -9:55 PM Sep 25th, 2012

duolit @laurapauling Getting overwhelmed and doing nothing. Just keep pushing forward, no matter what! #indiechat -9:56 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Addison_Moore @Stacey_WB Oh! I need your name, lol! I so want to do that. Steamy is fun. #indiechat -9:56 PM Sep 25th, 2012

KatGirl_Studio @duolit then I'll totally sign up =^.^= #indiechat -9:56 PM Sep 25th, 2012

duolit @bytefulcom Be friendly, skip the HTML stuff and keep it to no more than once a week #indiechat -9:56 PM Sep 25th, 2012

BiblioCrunch Alright, heading out a few minutes earlier! Chat soon! #indiechat -9:56 PM Sep 25th, 2012

AngelaAckerman @bytefulcom @laurapauling if I can add, don't make it 'all about you'. I know several authors who do this & think it is a mistake #indiechat -9:57 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Stacey_WB @Addison_Moore It is fun and a good way to get better at writing short stories. :) #indiechat -9:57 PM Sep 25th, 2012

laurapauling Be sure to check out @duolit blog for a terrific reserve of blog posts and services! #indiechat http://t.co/D0Fu1lpO -9:57 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Battista_j @SuttonShields @bytefulcom I did extended distribution and that gets me into Ingram which the bookstores order from. #indiechat -9:57 PM Sep 25th, 2012

SuttonShields @duolit @MXKremzen What do you mean by incentive, exactly? Man, my level of dumb if through the rood tonight. #indiechat -9:57 PM Sep 25th, 2012

duolit @BiblioCrunch Thanks for joining us! :-) #indiechat -9:57 PM Sep 25th, 2012

jclillis @overdunne That's so good to know! I'd been second-guessing myself about jumping from YA to adult contemp. #indiechat -9:57 PM Sep 25th, 2012

chihuahuazero I'll be leaving now. Good night, fellow writers! #indiechat -9:58 PM Sep 25th, 2012

overdunne @chel_c_cam good luck with your ad/release! #indiechat -9:58 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Battista_j @SuttonShields @bytefulcom Anyone can walk into a bookstore and order my book if they don't stock it. #indiechat -9:58 PM Sep 25th, 2012

MXKremzen @duolit Definitely not! Truth always outs and fake/bought reviews should be avoided like the plague. #indiechat -9:58 PM Sep 25th, 2012

laurapauling @chihuahuazero Goodnight! #indiechat -9:58 PM Sep 25th, 2012

bytefulcom @duolit Thanks :) Is once a month too infrequent? #indiechat -9:58 PM Sep 25th, 2012

duolit Yes! RT @AngelaAckerman: if I can add, dont make it all about you. I know several authors who do this & think it is a mistake #indiechat -9:58 PM Sep 25th, 2012

KatGirl_Studio @duolit what if i already receive your newsletter? will this sign me up twice? #indiechat -9:58 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Addison_Moore @Stacey_WB Are novelleas better in the that genre? #indiechat -9:58 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Loriprima RT @laurapauling: Be sure to check out @duolit blog for a terrific reserve of blog posts and services! #indiechat http://t.co/D0Fu1lpO -9:58 PM Sep 25th, 2012

laurapauling @AngelaAckerman I agree. I love putting suggestions for great reads in my newsletter. #indiechat -9:59 PM Sep 25th, 2012

duolit @SuttonShields Like offering a giveaway of something to reward people for reviews. It leads to weak/not genuine responses #indiechat -9:59 PM Sep 25th, 2012

chel_c_cam @overdunne Thank you! It's in a new genre, so I have no idea how it's going to go. #indiechat -9:59 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Addison_Moore @BiblioCrunch lol! @laurapauling #indiechat -9:59 PM Sep 25th, 2012

duolit @bytefulcom No, but definitely no less often. Experiment, too, to see if more often is better. #indiechat -9:59 PM Sep 25th, 2012

overdunne @jclillis my adult contemp is VERY different from my YA's. VERY intense emotionally. May have to clarify to readers. #indiechat -9:59 PM Sep 25th, 2012

duolit @SuttonShields People will see through that, esp. if you have tons of 5 star, five word reviews :-/ #indiechat -9:59 PM Sep 25th, 2012

jclillis @Diana_Murdock Amen to that. #indiechat -9:59 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Battista_j @SuttonShields @bytefulcom Yes, I took in 6 trade paperbacks. They've been checked out pretty steadily. #indiechat -10:00 PM Sep 25th, 2012

laurapauling @duolit So it's better to have a smaller but genuine response. #indiechat -10:00 PM Sep 25th, 2012

overdunne @chel_c_cam Ooh! Fun stuff! :) #indiechat -10:00 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Stacey_WB @Addison_Moore People like, uh, quick, ha ha. 8K-15K for 99 cents sell really well. #indiechat -10:00 PM Sep 25th, 2012

bytefulcom @Battista_j @SuttonShields Doesn't that involve a reoccuring fee? I heard you make much less per book sold. Is it worth it? #indiechat -10:00 PM Sep 25th, 2012

duolit @KatGirl_Studio Nope! It'll just keep you on once :-) #indiechat -10:00 PM Sep 25th, 2012

Battista_j @SuttonShields @bytefulcom I also offered my ebooks for free for libraries on Smashwords. #indiechat -10:00 PM Sep 25th, 2012

SuttonShields @duolit Oooh, of course, that would wreak of smarmy! Okay. I LOVE the idea of giveaways, but strictly for fun and smiles. #indiechat -10:01 PM Sep 25th, 2012

laurapauling @duolit Thank you so much for being out guest tonight and offering your wisdom! Great chat, everyone! #indiechat -10:01 PM Sep 25th, 2012

chel_c_cam @overdunne Oh yeah :) #indiechat -10:01 PM Sep 25th, 2012

duolit Yes, definitely! RT @laurapauling: @duolit So its better to have a smaller but genuine response. #indiechat -10:01 PM Sep 25th, 2012
