Johnny Depp, Chocolate chip cookies, and Me.

Hey, Laura here. I have a confession, and I’m just going to come right out with it: I love spies...and Johnny Depp.

I mean I don’t really love him because I don’t know him. But I love who he is as an actor. (Okay, plus he’s kinda cute and sexy all rolled into one.) (And don’t worry Castle, you’re my TV crush. Johnny’s my movie crush. So no fighting, you two!)

I don’t want to know anything about his real life because I don’t want to hear that he does horrible things or that he doesn’t like homemade chocolate chip cookies just from the oven with the chips all melty and yummy because then my image will be forever shattered. Now if he likes to frolic in the fields with cute fluffy bunnies and help orphans, I don’t mind hearing that.

I was reading a bit on my friend, Johnny, and noticed that his career didn’t really take off until he paired with Tim Burton in Edward Scissorhands. (Which by the way I loved!) I love that Depp is known for his quirky, artistic movies.

And, of course, when he’s in slightly different movies, I’ll still watch.

What’s the point?

Sometimes we don’t succeed at the things we try. At first. It might be that we just haven’t found our niche yet. Or that we’re trying to do something for the wrong reasons.

Like trying to fit in with the group of popular and wealthy playground moms when our next best friend could be dropping off her child at afternoon Kindergarten and we just haven’t met yet. Yes, sometimes the whole middle school thing carries over into adulthood. The mean girls often turn into the snobby moms. It’s a vicious cycle.

Or maybe a high school girl desperately tries to be a cheerleader when that’s not her gifting or path - she just thinks it is. Or she feels that instant popularity will bring happiness, which we might learn the hard way that it doesn't.

Kid, teen, adult, when we look at who we are and accept ourselves we can then move forward with confidence. As a writer. As a mom. As a spy. As a teen. As an athlete. As an artist. As a pirate. As a lover of warm chocolate chip cookies straight from the oven.

Be like Johnny. Embrace you. Embrace all the quirks and weirdness - or the complete normalness. And be happy.

Are there any movies, actors or T.V. shows that speak to you? Make you fall in love?

  1. Johnny did the smart thing by moving away from the typical heartthrob roles. Only then did his career take off. He didn't care if he didn't look gorgeous on screen, and that's what makes him so great.

Seriously, who doesn't like chocolate chip cookies straight from the over?????

  2. He's my favorite too for all the reasons you mentioned. I think that's what attracts me to him. Yes, looks is part of it, but I respect that he didn't do things just to try and get the Oscar, he did them for him.
I can't think of any others at the moment, my eyes keep staring at the words warm chocolate chip cookies. If you are pulling some out of the oven, I'll be right over.

  3. Cookies for everyone! For all the reasons you two mentioned is why I "love" and respect him as an actor. I try and apply this concept to my writing and my idea creation. We have to be true to ourselves as authors! And as people in real life.

  4. Blending what we want to do with what we are gifted to do is one of those life challenges. Well said, Laura!

  5. Johnny Depp is a fantastic actor, and I really like Edward Scissorhands, too. It's so weird but it's good! My favorite movie with him is Chocolat, which is one of his more "normal" roles. I like when he plays bizarre characters, though. Captain Jack Sparrow is hilarious!

And now I want some chocolate chip cookies, yum!!

  6. Oh, Johnny....*sigh* This would be a great post for Magan/RaShelle's Nerdy website. I adore Edward Scissorhands, precisely because it reflects a lot of Johnny's career (even the stodgy, snobby housewives wanted his haircut at one point *smile*).

Quirky is cool. An author I know wrote a book about this concept. She called nerdy cool "Dorkismo." LOVE that term--sums Johnny up perfectly. Great post!

  7. I also love Johnny. He's one of my faves. I'll watch anything he does. Simon Pegg is also one of my faves. He's so creative and nerdy and I love it. I'll see anything he does as well. And he's so creative, he writes movies as well as acts.

One of my dreams is to someday write a movie that actually gets made. *crosses fingers*

  9. Oh Johnny. Don't get me started. My husband knows seeing any movie of Johnny's means lots of oohs, ahs, and inappropriate comments. Can't help it. Great actor, family man, and good to his fan. Oh, and EYE CANDY that gets better with age:)
